Comcast's soon-to-be-independent cable networks division has officially been named Versant. This announcement comes via a staff memo from Mark Lazarus, the executive appointed to lead the new company. Versant will be the parent company for a portfolio of well-known channels including MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, and Golf Channel.

The official separation from Comcast, previously known as SpinCo, is anticipated later this year. In his memo, Lazarus stated, “Versant represents more than a name — it speaks to our adaptability and embraces the opportunity to shape a new, modern media company.” He explained that the name was chosen after a comprehensive process involving internal brand marketers, designers, and strategists, culminating in the selection from thousands of possibilities.

Brand marketers Lisa Fleming and Mike DeRienzo, in a staff announcement, described Versant, referencing a mountain slope, as evoking “strength” and “forward movement.” The company's permanent headquarters will be in Manhattan, with a temporary office nicknamed "summer camp."

Lazarus mentioned that over 5,000 people have expressed interest in joining Versant, and a careers website showcasing over 100 job openings is set to launch this week. MSNBC, which will become independent from NBC News post-spinoff, is reportedly building its own news division. Details about MSNBC's streaming strategy remain unannounced, although its content previously appeared on Peacock, a platform that will stay with Comcast.
