Comcast's soon-to-be independent cable networks division has officially been named Versant, as announced in a staff memo by Mark Lazarus, the CEO of the new company. This rebranding encompasses a portfolio of well-known channels, including MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, and the Golf Channel.

The formal separation from Comcast, previously codenamed SpinCo, is slated for completion later this year. In his memo, Lazarus stated, “Versant represents more than a name — it speaks to our adaptability and embraces the opportunity to shape a new, modern media company.” He explained that the name selection followed a comprehensive process involving internal brand marketers, designers, and strategists, evaluating thousands of options before settling on a final three, which then underwent rigorous legal and design reviews.

Brand marketers Lisa Fleming and Mike DeRienzo, in a staff announcement, described Versant, meaning the slope of a mountain, as evoking “strength” and “forward movement.” The company’s permanent headquarters will be in Manhattan, with a temporary office nicknamed “summer camp.” Lazarus also highlighted the significant interest in joining the new company, with over 5,000 applicants and a careers site featuring over 100 open positions launching this week.

MSNBC, which will become independent from NBC News after the spinoff, is reportedly establishing its own news division. Details regarding MSNBC's future streaming strategy remain unannounced, though its content has previously appeared on Peacock, a platform remaining under Comcast's ownership.
