The inner workings of the Papal Conclave, traditionally cloaked in secrecy, were brought to life for viewers through the innovative use of extended reality (XR) technology. Networks like NBC News and CNN created immersive virtual recreations of the Sistine Chapel, the location where cardinals elect the next Pope. These virtual environments served as the backdrop for explainer segments, offering viewers a clearer understanding of the election process.
Both NBC and CNN incorporated floating text panels to detail the proceedings. While strikingly similar—a testament to the Sistine Chapel’s well-documented interior—NBC’s version boasted a richer visual quality. CNN’s virtual chapel, however, distinguished itself by populating the seats with virtual representations of cardinals. Both networks also included exterior views of the Vatican City. CNN’s recreation further showcased the chapel’s famous vaulted ceilings with wider shots highlighting the grandeur of the space and its frescoes.
The segments from CNN and MSNBC appeared pre-produced; the future application of these virtual spaces, whether for live broadcasts or future use, remains unclear. CBS took a different approach, utilizing its virtual production capabilities to place its talent within a circular studio set frequently used for weather segments. While not a complete virtual recreation of the Sistine Chapel, this method allowed for the incorporation of imagery on virtual walls and even a map on the floor to illustrate the conclave process.
